How To Create a Safe Home for Your Family

One of the most important things you can do for your family is to create a safe home for your family. A safe home reduces the risk of injuries and illness and protects the personal safety of your loved ones. There are a few simple ways you can make your home the safe oasis that you and your family deserve.

Physical Security

Unfortunately, crime is on the rise in the United States. No matter where you live, or travel, personal physical safety should be a priority. How can you protect your loved ones at home and while you travel? Consider these tips.

  • Have an alarm system installed in your home. An alarm system offers multiple layers of safe protection including fire alerts, intruder alerts, and, in some cases, carbon dioxide detection.
  • Install a fence around the perimeter of your home.
  • Make it a habit of checking locks on windows and doors. Access in about 28% of burglaries occurs through an unlocked window or door.

If you travel away from home your security system will be your eyes and ears.

Health Safety at Home

Unfortunately, you do not have to travel far in the United States to find problems with tap water. About 13 million homes depend on wells for their drinking water in the United States, according to the US Census American Housing Survey 2017. Contaminated water can be a real risk to your family if you depend on well water. Avoiding potential problems can be as easy as having your water source checked semi-annually.

Some counties offer free well water testing. In other cases, you will need to pay a small fee to a private lab to check the safety of your water. It is important to check your water regularly for pathogens. A whole-home water filtration system can ensure that the water coming into your home is safe.

Invest in Fire Suppression Equipment

Fire departments responded to about 1.4 million fires in 2020. Many of those fires not only caused serious property damage but also resulted in injuries and fatalities. Fire suppression equipment, fire alarms, and smoke detectors can save lives.

Many homeowners are having residential fire suppression systems installed to help protect their home and their loved ones. These high-tech systems can easily alert you when you are traveling away from home about smoke detection or when the fire suppression system has been engaged.

Structural Safety

Keeping your home safe can be achieved by having regular maintenance your home. Over 300 people each year are injured in their own homes because of structural problems in the home. One of the most common structural issues in a home is the roof. A roofing issue can travel from the top of your home and affect the foundation and other areas of your home.

Keeping your family safe, and avoiding injuries and property damage can be as simple as having regular roof inspections. The experts recommend you have your roof inspected at least twice a year. Roof inspections not only inspect your roof for potential roofing problems, but they can also identify potential hazards that present a risk of injury like overhanging tree branches that need to be removed.

A safe home is a well-maintained home. Other structural areas that you should check regularly include the foundation of your home, the basement or crawl space of your home, and areas around your home that could be trip and fall hazards. Also, periodically check the infrastructure of your home. The infrastructure of your home consists of the electrical wiring in your home and your plumbing.

Pest Control

When you check on the infrastructure of your home and come across frayed wiring in your attic or basement you may have a pest problem. Rodents will chew through wiring and sometimes PVC piping. They can travel from location to location in your home setting up nests, eating drywall, and depositing feces carrying disease. They love to travel around your home making it their own.

These were just a handful of simple tips you can follow. It can take some effort to make your home safer, but it is well worth the effort to know you are doing all you can to keep your home safe.
